The production of 1/2 oz gold maple leaf coins, a gold bullion coin created by the Canadian government, was first created in the year 1986, after 1 ounce gold maple leaf coins, 1/4 ounce gold maple leaf coins, and 1/10 ounce gold maple leaf coins were already in production for a number of years, starting in the late ‘70s. The gold content contained in 1/2 oz gold maple leaf coins is .9999 of pure gold and has remained consistently so up until the present day. The gold is measured consistently in Troy ounces, and 1/2 oz gold maple leaf coins are crafted of the best 24 karat gold available.

Interestingly, the 1/2 oz gold maple leaf coins have always maintained a purer content than the gold leaf maple coins that were first created in 1979 since such coins were crafted with a bullion content equivalent to .999. The 1/2 oz gold maple leaf coins have an obverse side presenting the emblem of Canada, the maple leaf, along with a marking that indicates the .9999 pure gold content in the coins. The reverse side of 1/2 oz gold maple leaf coins has a profile depiction of Queen Elizabeth in her youth. Also on the reverse side of the 1/2 oz gold maple leaf coins one will find the assigned face value of the coin, which is in no way equivalent to the actual value of the coin. Near the face value and to the right, one will find the year the coin was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. Arched above the stunningly molded profile of Queen Elizabeth, one will find the words “QUEEN ELIZABETH II” arched above her head.
